BERLIN - A WOMAN who jumped into a polar bear enclosure at the Berlin Zoo during feeding time has survived an attack by one of the bears.
The woman had climbed a fence and jumped into a water-filled moat surrounding the animals at about 10.30am local time on Friday, police said in a statement.
One of the bears dived into the water and mauled the woman, causing serious injuries to her legs and arms, police said.
At one point, the woman fell back into the water and was grabbed by a bear before eventually being hoisted to safety by zoo keepers. 'They saved her life,' Berlin police officer Goerg Gebhard told CNN on Sunday.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she is undergoing treatment, the CNN report said.
Police did not say why the woman jumped into the enclosure.
'The woman proved herself to be careless,' a police spokesman said afterwards, according to The Daily Telegraph. 'Logic tells us that polar bears will do this type of thing in this situation.'
